Restricted internet access on a US Navy ship can be a challenge, especially when on a sensitive mission in another country’s waters. Recently, a senior crew member on the USS Manchester took matters into their own hands by purchasing a Starlink connection for $2,800, incurring serious consequences in the process.
Command Senior Chief Grisel Marrero, along with other senior staff, installed the Starlink dish on the outside of the USS Manchester to bypass the Navy’s restrictions on internet usage. The cleverly hidden dish allowed the crew to check sports scores, stay in touch with loved ones, and stream movies while deployed to the West Pacific. However, their scheme was foiled when the WiFi network was discovered with the suspicious name “STINKY”, a giveaway for the unauthorized connection.
Marrero denied any knowledge of the clandestine internet setup and even went as far as changing the network name to resemble a wireless printer, despite the absence of such a device on board. The situation escalated when a worker from the Naval Information Warfare Center stumbled upon the unauthorized Starlink dish while installing an authorized Space X device. Marrero’s attempt to falsify data only added fuel to the fire, leading to a full investigation by the US Navy.
As a result of the investigation, Marrero pled guilty during a court martial and was relieved of her post. Additionally, all senior crew members involved with the unauthorized internet connection faced administrative non-judicial punishment at commodore’s mast. This punishment likely involved severe reprimands and disciplinary measures, highlighting the serious repercussions of their actions.
This incident serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of circumventing regulations on US Navy property. Installing unauthorized satellite internet connections not only violates protocol but also jeopardizes national security and puts lives at risk. Furthermore, it sheds light on the importance of adhering to established rules and regulations, regardless of personal convenience or motives.
The unauthorized Starlink connection on the USS Manchester underscores the consequences of disregarding protocol and seeking unauthorized solutions. The incident serves as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with serving in the US Navy and the critical importance of upholding the integrity and security of military operations.
