The Future of Hyundai’s Electric Vehicle Lineup

Hyundai recently made a significant announcement regarding their future electric vehicle lineup. The company revealed plans to introduce the Ioniq 9, a three-row SUV that will be manufactured at their factory in Georgia. This decision showcases Hyundai’s commitment to expanding its presence in the electric vehicle market by offering new models in popular segments.

The Ioniq 9 will be based on the Concept Seven platform, which was initially unveiled in 2021. This platform, known as the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), is also utilized in other Hyundai models such as the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, Kia EV6, Kia EV9, and Genesis GV60. The decision to build the Ioniq 9 at the company’s plant in Ellabel, GA, will allow Hyundai to qualify for the federal EV tax credit of $7,500, showcasing their strategic approach to manufacturing.

Hyundai plans to showcase a production version of the Ioniq 9 at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show. This event will provide an opportunity for consumers and industry experts to get a closer look at Hyundai’s latest electric vehicle offering. Additionally, Hyundai announced intentions to increase the presence of hybrids in their lineup to cater to US consumers who show a preference for hybrid vehicles over fully electric ones.

During an investor day conference, Hyundai executives hinted at the development of Extended Range Electric Vehicles (EREVs) to address the growing demand for vehicles with extended range capabilities. While the Concept Seven was originally advertised with a range of over 300 miles, Hyundai aims to push the boundaries further by exploring the possibility of EREVs with a range of over 560 miles when fully charged. This strategic move aligns with the industry trend towards increased range and efficiency in electric vehicles.

The Concept Seven from Hyundai stands out for its impressive design features, including a spacious wheelbase that surpasses 10.5 feet. This makes it longer than iconic SUVs like the Cadillac Escalade, positioning the Ioniq 9 as a formidable competitor in the oversized vehicle segment. The striking design elements, such as the extra-tall grille, highlight Hyundai’s bold approach to electric vehicle design, setting them apart from conventional offerings in the market.

Hyundai’s announcement of the Ioniq 9 and their strategic shift towards hybrid vehicles and EREVs signal a significant transformation in the company’s electric vehicle lineup. By introducing innovative models and embracing cutting-edge technology, Hyundai is poised to make a mark in the evolving electric vehicle market. The upcoming debut of the Ioniq 9 at the Los Angeles Auto Show will provide a platform for Hyundai to showcase their commitment to sustainability and innovation in the automotive industry.
